Ken Webb

About The Artist

Ken Webb is a New York based singer/songwriter.  The simplicity and depth of his songs put him in the ballpark of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens and Van Morrison, but his sound is all his own.   A rich and compelling baritone engages the listener on a journey with an attention to “story” often lacking in modern songwriting.  Ken is a wordsmith, a comedian, a lover, an observer, a philosopher, a survivor and a true artist.  He has written more songs than years in a century.

Ken Webb is also a film director.  “The Waiters” – Ken’s directorial thesis film from NYU’s Film School - has aired on Bravo, IFC, PBS and CBS plus numerous foreign TV networks including France’s Canal Plus. “The Waiters” also won top awards at The Chicago, Columbus International, Suffolk County and NYU’s First Run Film Festivals- and was a finalist for the Student Academy Award. Additionally, it has been programmed by numerous other festivals including The British International, France’s Short Circuit, and the Tel Aviv International Film Festivals to name a few.

Ken conceived, produced, directed and edited the music documentary film, “The World Wide Webb.” The film chronicles Ken’s experiment with the universal language of music and the most unifying technological advancement of our time- the internet, demonstrating the power of both music and the web to break down barriers and bring people together. The idea is for one singer/songwriter to use the web to contact different bands in different countries and various styles of music and invite them to reinterpret the songwriter’s material and perform together in a live concert.  The film follows Ken to 6 countries collaborating with 11 bands.

Ken has been an award-winning writer/director/producer/editor of on-air promos since 1993 (3 1/2 years staff at VH1)  His laundry list of promo campaigns includes work for MTV, Nickelodeon, WETV, Nicktoons Network, Showtime, TMC, IFC, AMC, Bravo, ESPN, and Nick at Nite, winning three industry Promax Awards along the way.

Ken has also produced/directed/edited several comic shorts for Chicago City Limits “1st Sundays” film festival – including “When Kansas Disappeared.”  As well as the shorts “Spare Change” and “Fear of Life” for NYC Midnight Run Film Festival and the short “La Liberte” for the 1st Ripfest Film Festival.  All three of these festivals are experiments in creating films with certain restrictions of time (sometimes as short as 24 hours from conception to completion) theme or location, or based on a given title or even using a non-actor chosen randomly from a general audience.

For four years while at NYU, Ken was a founding member of a comedy group that would later be known as MTV’s The State. Ken has appeared in front of the camera many times including a Nick at Nite Mary Tyler Moore Marathon campaign parodying Jonathan Richman’s character in the film, “There’s Something About Mary.” Ken acted in the NBC holiday special “Our Christmas Alien,” which was the lead in for The Cosby Show in 1985 - back when Cosby was king. Plus he learned to ballroom dance alongside Jennifer Lopez, when they were both 16-year-old kids in the Bronx.
